Serves them right.
They should be thankful it's only six years.

But it costs something like £30 000 a year to keep them in prison here.

Personally I don't agree with moving people to different countires/prisons to suit them. They should be made to serve it in a prison in Peru.

That is not the way to think of it. Imagine if you were banged up in some jail after an incident on holiday. Now the local justice system is corrupt and so you get banged up for three years on spurious charges. Now would you like the option of being in a british gaol or a foreign prison where the murder rate is possibly so high that the odds are low that you will not live the three years or that your health will suffer so much that your life expectancy is significantly reduced? Now would you want to be allowed the option of transferring home where at least your family can see you?

How is this corrupt? They were caught red handed?

And would it have more of a detterent effect if people thought they wouldn't serve time in a cushy prison here?

I am not saying that this case is corrupt. Yes they were caught, but you missed the point. It was if YOU were on a holiday somewhere and were framed. Would you want to be sent home to serve your sentence at home?

Deterrence only works on rational people, criminals are hardly that.

True they will still have to rot in A Peruvian jail for some time before they are returned home.

Deterrence and rationality does not work with desperate people.

I am not saying that they should not do time but smuggling drugs are pretty much illegal everywhere even if possession is decriminalised in a few places. So they cannot claim they did not realise what was happening. How long is up to the Peruvian courts.
