http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24335097It'll probably cost more overall to enforce than replace the items in a lot of cases

Idiots. If they did that they would be in for decades paying off the debt. If they are released and have to steal to survive then they will be a permanent inmate with a permanent debt burden. They can already increase their sentence for criminal damage.

But couldn't they take it or of the money they earn in prison? I know that's not a lot, but if they have years left to serve it'll add up.

Yes but at £4 a week what will they do if the person has loads outstanding when they are released? Take it off the prisoners release grant and force them back into crime on day one of release? Alternatively they could block release until the debt was paid but that would turn all prisons into debtors prisons and that would be illegal.

I'm not suggesting they'll be able to get all of it. But if they took £2 pet week from someone with a year left to serve, at least that's just over £100 less coming out of the prison budget.

That is not so bad. If they took all of the inmates money it would only cause other problems, it also introduces them to the world of work and high taxation losing 50% of their income to the government.

Make the family responsible, if the prisoner can't pay, then his family have to pay the debt. Maybe that will get some sense knocked into him, once his parents, children or siblings get the bill... Over here, the parents have to help pay for unemployed children and the children have to help pay for their parents, if they are in a home.

What about orphans or those that are separated from their family. There are thousands who have no contact with their family. What about people who killed their family? Should they pay for the antics of a former family member who none want anything to do with?

And if they can’t or won‘t pay? What then? Criminalise a whole family because of the failings of one person?

It is looking like another "we need to be seen to be doing something" policy.

Can't is can't. The law says, if you earn less than 1.250€ a month, you are not in a position to pat maintenance for your ex spouse, kids or parents.
