Got a call from my brother today.

He took my mum away for the weekend to a hotel spa.

She collapsed in the shower on Sunday and had to go into hospital. She is back home now, but is very weak and can't go around the flat on her own. My brother has arranged care for her, but that starts tomorrow. :(

Will be flying over again this week.

I'm a little older than you Dave but two and a half years ago I had a similar situation with my own Mum. Happily I was close to hand and was able to help.

I feel for you because you don't have the luxury of being close enough to respond immediately and also because I guess you'd move hell and high water to be able to and yet have to rely on international transport to get you there.

Chin up my friend and I hope you find your Mum much better and in fine spirits when you get back to the UK. Do keep us informed on her progress.

I hope she's reasonably comfortable, and your trip is uneventful. There's not much else I can add :(

Neither of my parents are in the best of health, and I do worry what will happen when one of them goes. I don't think either would cope well on their own. They live in the middle of France, and although they have plenty of caring friends they are quite isolated and their friends aren't exactly young either.

Europe is pretty accessible these days, but arranging and catching a flight is still a lot more time consuming than jumping in a car. However, the British climate may well have done for both of them by now if they'd stayed here. That might sound ridiculous, but their health improved dramatically when they left blighty.

Thanks everyone.

Looks like she will be going into a hospice shortly.

I guess she has another couple of weeks, at most....

Same happened to my grandparents when they went over.

Best of luck Dave, hope she gets better.

Having been through it, (17 years ago) all I can say is it's not going to be easy, but all you can do is get back to your mum and spend as much time with her as you can.

EDIT: I've just realised that this is my FPOTD, but it just goes to show that some things are more important...
