At least six people, including police officers, have been killed by a bomb apparently targeting anti-polio campaigners in Pakistan.

The blast struck a van near a hospital in the Budh Bher area of the north-western city of Peshawar.

Militants have previously attacked and killed health workers vaccinating children against the disease.

WTF? That makes no sense to me, even by religious nutter standards.
How can anyone think preventing an illness like that is a bad thing that is worthy of killing people?

They think its a western soft power hearts and minds campaign against them. And they think the doctors are spies.

It's not out of keeping with the way we're percieved in a lot of the world. Did you know that Boko Haram in Nigeria actually teaches that the Earth is flat, and all the pictures from space of it being round are a dirty atheistical devil trick?

I understand that in Egypt it is actually currently very widely accepted that a conspiracy of Al Qaeda, the US government and Israel arranged for Mohammed Morsi to win the presidential election. This is reported as if fact by state owned newspapers.

God, look, there are plenty of people who think their religious beliefs are more important than the lives of even their loved ones. Look at (I think it is) Jehovah's witnesses, won't allow blood transfusions or a big bunch of medical procedures and therefore occasionally watch their children die unless the courts intervene. Blowing up strangers, even ones doing something that objectively can only be seen as good? Most religious nut-balls can do that and be home in time for cornflakes.
