Higgs boson scientists win Nobel prize in physics

Two scientists have won the Nobel prize in physics for their work on the theory of the Higgs boson.

Peter Higgs, from the UK, and Francois Englert from Belgium, shared the prize.

In the 1960s they were among several physicists who proposed a mechanism to explain why the most basic building blocks of the Universe have mass.

The mechanism predicts a particle - the Higgs boson - which was finally discovered in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at Cern, in Switzerland

Best bit : They couldn't find Peter Higgs to tell him 'cos he's gone off on holiday and left his phone behind. A very wise man indeed.

Next best bit : there's a thing on at the place I work next week where three of the University's physics researchers are going to talk about the work they do. One of them is going to talk about the Higgs Boson. Peter Higgs is apparently likely to be in the audience. No pressure, then :lol:
