I know. Sorry. After reading something on The Register about Assange having 6 fingers, I ended up there thanks to Google.

I've always had fond feelings towards extra digits since reading The Chrysalids.

The Iranians have reverse engineered a Soviet supercavitation rocket torpedo. That has the potential to give the Americans a headache is they have their fleet in the gulf if everything kicks off.

Yes they were demonstrating them during the last Persian Gulf crisis. They are too fast for most ships to evade.

I suspect the point in this case is that ships don't actually 'evade' as in 'run away from' torps, they deploy countermeasures. Faster torps = less time between detection and impact, therefore less time to deploy countermeasures.
Mind you, a rocket powered torp.. pretty much anyone in the same ocean is going to know it's there as soon as the rocket ignites.

They can change direction so unguided torpedoes will miss. Though if these are guided that makes that all a moot point, then it becomes an issue of counter measures and the time to use them.

They are indeed guided.
The we're originally designed to force US subs to turn and sever the control wire if they fired on soviet subs. The Soviets knew they couldn't always track subs behind them, but they could tell if a torpedo was fired at them.

I'm not sure anyone that would be attacking the Americans would be using unguided torps these days. It's pretty much either 'developed navy' or 'bloke in dinghy with RPG'.

True but I keep thinking of the Millennium Challenge 2002. Where an undeveloped nation could have devastated the US navy. Simply loads of unguided torpedoes which cannot be jammed can make counter measures obsolete.
