Nexus 4 problem. It seems to be intermittently charging as shown by the icon blinking on and off. At first I thought it was the car charger but the mains charger does it too. Google said they are going to do a warranty replacement. All has been painless so far.

There are plenty of rumours going round that the release day (on paper) for the Nexus 5 is tomorrow.
I might get one for the missus as she's moving to a sim only contract from PAYG.

Apparently it's been delayed as the part of the US government that passes things as safe to sell is shut down. They're now estimating the start of November for the launch.

If that is not resolved then it could cause problems for Apple as well next week, unless they had everything certified before the shutdown.

Apple only posted their invites yesterday, when the shutdown had already been on for about two weeks. I doubt they'd do that on the gamble that things would get worked out in time if they didn't already have their ducks in a row. Plus as iPads aren't 'phones', they may not even require the same level of certification.

From what I remember about the previous certifications of the phones that it was done a couple of months before the announcement. The final appearance might be different but I doubt that, as they have to make 20 million for launch day and they ship them to into the US a few days before, though with the shut down would there be any customs officers on duty? The iPads might still require some certification particularly if they are going to be used on aircraft. Also there are 4G versions likely to be announced. There was something online about airlines finally allowing electronic devices to be used on flights this week.

Though for Google it might be better to be even further behind because for the first week there will be an avalanche of press reports on the new Apple stuff so any news about the Nexus will only be picked up by specialist Android blogs and press, and barely make the news.

It won't matter. Nexus phones are so cheap for what they are, they always sell out almost immediately.

It is for that reason they have replaces feature phones in the west.

I was reading about how few Android devices are actually up graded to the latest OS. Why is that? It is not cost as Android is free like iOS. So it must be another reason.

its the phone makers and the carriers if they are vodaphone etc branded. As they all add and change the vanilla android. If they dont want to release the new version and you don't want to jailbreak then you are stuck on an old version.

It's hard to convince the bean counters that spending money on supporting handsets that aren't generating any profit any more is a good idea...

Very tempting to upgrade my S3 to it, but I think I'm going to hold off a while as the S3 is still under contract and it's only really cosmetic damage to the front (which is annoying as replacing the front requires a new screen!)

Dissapointed they still don't offer expandable storage on the Nexus devices

The manufacturers and the providers earn money when you upgrade the phone to a newer version, they make a loss if they update you old phone to a newer version of thru OS. Only Google is earning off the back end through app and media sales through their store.
