Thumbing through Empire magazine, I spotted something out of the corner of my eye and I had to double check it to be sure. It was a photo of bonkers ex-antipodean Mel Gibson; a still shot from his latest film. He's kneeling next to the recently deceased corpse of a teenage girl, killed in what appears to be a road accident.
The title of the film in question? 'Edge of Darkness'.
Yes, they've taken one of the best, most complex thrillers ever produced in Britan and made it into a two hour movie starring an aged action hero. I imagine there will be explosions. Even given it's directed by the director the original TV series, I can't see how it would be anywhere near as good. I can't see why they feel the need. i'm just glad most of the people involved the first time round are too dead to see it.
Anyone care to join me in travelling over to America, buying some flaming torches, pitchforks and other farm implements and doing some serious mischief to a few hollywood studios? Or should I just wait for Karma's revenge in the form of swine flu to take them all?
Jon

This is just soooo wrong. The original TV series was excellent - I remember it was the topic of discussion at work. The BBC did good. Sign me up for the pitchfork expedition.

I've never seen the original 'Edge of Darkness'. Is it very long and complicated?
I'd probably enjoy a shorter, more dumbed-down version. I'm still waiting for a film of that series with the backwards talking strangeness; it was far too long for my little brain to concentrate on even though I wanted to.

Iv'e never seen Edge of Darkness, but I agree about Hollywood. I remember reading about 2 or 3 years ago about how Hollywood was going to make a film called "The Few" staring Tom Cruise. He was going to play a US pilot who fought with the RAF during tha Battle Of Britain, and I guess in American fashion save all us Brits single handed. Now the thought of that made me mad.

It was very good - a 6 parter IIRC. It was about a policeman whose daughter was killed. Central character kept having conversations with her throughout the series. It had a very haunting theme tune - played by Eric Clapton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_of_darkness

It's not exactly light entertainment but it's only mildly complicated. Mind you, I am someone who grew up watching 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'; I think that did something weird to my brain which allows me to follow things like this. There are at least two gunfights, as I recall. My argument would be that rather than butchering what is a very well made original series to make it into a two hour film why not just make a new two hour film? Generally of course this is because Hollywood has almost totally given up on making 'new' films for the mainstream - what have we got this summer? An origin story for a character that's been in three films already and a 'reboot' (oh my god) of a nearly 50 year old TV series. By the other one I assume you mean Twin Peaks? They did actually make a film of that. I believe it's called 'Fire Walk With Me' and it's even more confusing than the TV series. Jon

I've just been reading that apparently they're in the midst of a remake of "Videodrome". Apparently the new one (and I quote) will "introduce the idea of nano-technology and make the film a large-scale sci-fi action piece."
Funnily enough, Cronenberg is not involved...
Why bother?

I hate Hollywood too, but I definitely hate Bollywood more. When I see a Bollywood film, I really can't see any aspect of it that makes me think I might want to watch it. Just the same as all those weird cartoon films like Dragonball Z etc. Sure, if you're a kid then they're probably excellent. But fully grown men watching them? A little odd if you ask me. That might not be too popular around here (there are probably people who watch anime etc which I put in the same boat) but I really can't see anything that could appeal to anyone except kids.
