http://www.computerandvideogames.com/ar ... ?id=218563If this works out, I'll actually consider getting a PS3 Especially if it's smaller and cheaper than the current behemoth

I always had a nagging feeling that they didn't add PS2-compatability to the European PS3s because of the sheer volume of PS2s that they were still shifting. Now that the sales are slowing, I reckon they'll bring out these new PS3s to get that added leg up over the competition..
Possibly just my cynicism showing through though...

Mine too, the original 60gb PS3 had software emulation in PAL territories like ours. The NTSC ones had PS2 hardware alongside the PS3 stuff. I can see why they stripped out the PS2 hardware, but the software emulation could have remained.

I think the new backward comparability thing they are doing is purely software emulation, so it could be an update to cover all consoles. bit-techI wasn't aware that our PAL 60GB consoles already did it over software, strange how 40gb consoles couldn't do it then don't you think. Wasn't there something called the emotion chip they needed to emulate the PS2? Joe

I was under the impression that only the earlier ones did that...

Yep the 60GB models offered backwards compatibility, hence were more expensive.

Sony only need to look around a few forums to realise the sales this could bring in - so I wish they'd do it

It did seem odd that they didn’t have the hardware support in there from the start. The games for the PS3 at launch weren’t brilliant, and like many others, I traded in my PS2 for the new hardware, and I have a shelf of games for that system. The transition from the first PlayStation to the PS2 was much better due to the instant backwards compatibility.

I'm considering getting a PS2 just for the Gran Turismo series. If a PS3 comes along that can do PS2 as well, then that might change things.

Assuming they don't do something monumentally stupid and price it even sadder than the PSP Go: http://www.play.com/Games/PSP/4-/102879 ... oduct.html And you should read the load of absolute sh1t they justified that price with, the f*cktards I'd prepare for the upcoming slim PS3 to actually be more expensive than the current one, especially if they add the PS2 BC

The problem is, how long should Sony continue "legacy" support? Should the PS5 play PS2 games?
It's got to stop somewhere to give Sony a clean break.
