I found that you can always hide the dock and maximise the app and still have the menu bar open and get a pretty decent sized app window without having to go full screen. It is handy if you need it. It is not essential for me though.

I've just paid for a 17" MacBook Pro (Feb,2011) - 2.2GHz Intel i7. \•/

I'd recommend an ssd over hdd. It really does speed up the whole experience. As for full screen apps, you still have the menu bar there. It is just hidden. Move your mouse to the top and it will appear.

I have a MBA with an ssd and my work laptop is a higher spec MBP with HDD. My MBA is faster.
