http://www.shortnews.de/id/1062406/bald ... -diebstahl(German) The government is looking at taking away people's driving licences for crimes like theft, drunk and disorderly, rioting etc. This is aimed at younger people who value their licence. The government hopes that it will make them think twice, before committing a crime...

Hardly fair as not every one who commits those crimes with have a license. License removal should only be linked to driving offences.

Depends how it was enacted, maybe. You're somewhat taking away someone's freedom, so for talk's sake in conjunction with a fine and/or community service... depends on the crime too of course.

Sorry, it was late, so it was a quick post. It is being considered as an alternative to custodial sentences - where custodial would probably be too harsh and a fine to little. I'm guessing that if they don't have a licence, then they will face a custodial sentence.

It is a stupid idea. It could mean that someone with a job will lose that job because of their license removal. In the end all it might do is force people to drive without a license and insurance. The problem is that people who commit crimes never think of the consequences. Just look at the MP's expenses scandals as a perfect example.

If you have a job that you will lose because of this you also have a lawyer who will tell that to the judge. If the judge is persuaded then you get some other punishment. So it's only a stupid idea if you either assume stupidity on the part of the judge, or if you have an addiction to inane automatic sentences that deprive judges of initiative.

Too right. And TBH I don't much like the idea that needing to be able to drive in order to work is considered to be an acceptable defence in driving offences. IMO being allowed to drive on public roads is a privilege not a right and if you need to be able to drive in order to do or get to your job, then you shouldn't be driving like a twat in the first place.

Isn't it how it works in the US if you're caught drinking before you turn 21?

To be fair, an alcoholic probably isn't someone you want behind the wheel anyway.

True but it is ridiculous to start depriving people of other rights rather than sentence them to gaol. Why not strip fraudsters of their passports? Apart from the fact that most criminals never think about the consequences it would only create a logistical nightmare as well, also too many MP's would be impacted. Stripping them of their driving license for expenses fraud would only mean they start claiming for chauffeurs. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
