Yes but if they combine their network they might actually be able to create a better combined network, as they fill in each others gaps. It could also mean that the O2 customers might also benefit from the roaming deal in the US in the FYI thread.

Remember how Three used to have a bad rep on the mainland? We're still living with that, not helped by being a small island with plenty of features and a border

I've did OK without them

I'm still really peeved by Three.

They do have problems but mine have been settled without too much problem.

Three doesn't have any 3G network in Belfast. None.
I know this because I was considering moving to them from o2. No move after finding that out.
