I can see where he's coming from, I mean if you've taken your child to be baptised you really should have an idea of and believe in it yourself.

That said, I've no idea what the figures are like for baptism, but I imagine the church welcomes anything that gets people through the doors these days.

Given that the practice of child baptism is (theologically speaking) total drivel, I'm not entirely sure what the problem is supposed to be.

With most peoples short attention spans I can sort of understand why.

My missus wanted ours christened in a Catholic Church. We had to go to lessons before they'd do it.

Over here you need to attend a set number of services beforehand. Likewise, for confirmation, the children have to attend confirmation school and at least 20 or so Sunday Services before they can be confirmed. I think Catholic Churches might be even stricter.

In Austria, Catholics can only marry in the church if they want to have children. Loving each other and wanting to share their lives with each other isn't enough...

I'm not confirmed as I flunked Sunday mass :P
but yes, to have any rites down you have to be practicing. My mum has the (dis)pleasure of taking my sister to church every Sunday lately so that she can do Holy Communion next year.

The fact that you attended should be a pass.

It was enough for the wife to get the boys christened.
I argued we shouldn't have to do them for the second one as we'd already done them once. I lost that argument.

You could have gotten out by pointing out that there is no theological basis for Christening at all, and in fact it runs contrary to what the Bible says on the subject...

That would imply I've read bits of the Bible.

Oh dear. We wouldn't want to dumb down this part of the fairy tale at all would we.

Maybe people will stop remembering that a magical, bearded, omnipotent sky fairy is looking out for them.
