Wanted: Dead or Alive - Strange one this, Rutger Hauer stars as the 1980's descendant of Steve McQueen's character from the TV show of the same name (I'd never heard of the show).

It's worth watching but it's got very little to do with the show I'd imagine, it's got the nasty streak typical of Hauer films, and it's more like a thriller novel about an ex-CIA guy (you know how those go). It also stars Gene Simmons lol.

Haunted House - Not even Scary Movie-funny, more Jimmy Savile-levels of creepy.

Robot and Frank - Great little film, no messing about, gets right to the point. Sort of thing anyone could watch.

My trailer sense were tingling for that one, I steered well clear.

You missed out. I'm not sure what JV's objections actually are, because he didn't bother to tell us, but I thought it was an excellent film.

Not a case of couldn't be bothered. Just super busy but I've got a few bits to do on the pc tomorrow so I'll try and gather my thoughts and wrote something meaningful then.

Sent from my big ass Sony Xperia Z Ultra tabphonelet, using Tapatalk 4.

Don Jon, good film, enjoyed it, very good observational humour in between the drama, light-hearted, dialogue was a little clunky, but had a small indie film feel to it, recommended, very adult-themed though so be wary.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation (AKA The Gringo I believe) - It's a strange concept all round, mostly like a cross between Payback (Gibson's version) and a prison movie via Martin Riggs. It's OK, especially considering it's setting, but that's all.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Good. Subtle, big budget film, lukewarm throughout, but touching, feel-good ending, reminded me of the tone of films such as 500 Days of Summer, doesn't take itself too seriously. Nice to see Ben Stiller in a mostly straight role.

Blackfish

An entriely one sided viewpoint against Orca captivity. However I can't imagine a Sea World film could spin it in a good light after just a few basic facts are known.

Ok so it's more of a documentary, but I did see it at the cinema.

I'm not sure how to rate Only God Forgives. It was pretentious slow and boring, but then again, it was meant to be, and some people love crap like that; hence Lynch.

To my personal tastes: 3/10

As a pretentious good-looking artsy film, 5/10.

Totally lacking in intelligence and depth either way.

Is that another one of those Ryan Gosling films as I've started calling them? The ones critics are inexplicably wanking over?

American Hustle:
Very decent. 7.5/10.
Christian Bale's superb. I'll forgive him his Batman after this.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

Ah, very good, helped by an of course amazing storyline, respectful to its subjects, its drama is pulled from the aching sense of loss in Nelson's life, lost to his incarceration. The focus is on the tragedy of apartheid and the contrast between the ugliness of the struggle and the beautiful scenery of South Africa. It is sad but never desperate, it is much more forgiving of the audience than 12 Years, much easier to watch, sad but enjoyable, deeply melancholic in places but in the end joyful and uplifting. A very good film.

7/10
