Way to conflate and confuse the issue. Nobody in their right mind wants 'competition' in schools and hospitals, they just want good local services. And hasn't competition been just marvellous for the rail network...

The problem is that the Government want to reward their backers with access to government contracts and the so called competition is basically payback for party donations.

But people in their right minds do want the supposed benefits of competition. They want increasing cost-effectiveness, and the transmission of better practices. I think the thing you reject is 'markets' which are pointlessly superimposed onto structures where they make no sense, which is reasonable.

If one school develops a new idea that improves outcomes for their students, you probably do want that idea to be taken up by other schools. And you probably don't want those other schools to just ignore this new idea because it doesn't fit in with what they have always done. So some element of competition that helps spread the good idea isn't in itself a bad thing.

The conservatives are free market dogmatists. They believe competition always improves everything and private industry is always better than public industry. These two beliefs are sacrosanct and not open to question.
