Tube workers clearing up at the scene said the contractors, VINCI BAM Nuttall, appeared to have poured concrete into a void in an escalator machine room that burst through into the signal equipment room with a flood up to a foot (30cm) deep. Power and signalling was switched off for safety reasons. Passengers were initially told the closure was due to “flooding” at Victoria Station.

I have a friend who is an engineer with that company. I wonder what he will have to say about this.

drilling a hole through a wall and not checking what's on the other side?

I have had confirmation that it was my friends employer but not my friend. I have been told of various cock ups that he has found and experienced on sites.

Just another proof that it's better to be an above ground engineer than a geotech ;)

How they used sugar to clean it up.
Chemistry is strange but occasionally awesome.

We use sugar offshore too.
If they get any cement unexpectedly back at surface after a cement job we throw either sugar or citric acid into the cuttings ditch/auger and active pit to stop it setting. A couple of 25kg sacks usually does the job.
(If it's water based mud it may take a lot more acid to prevent the high pH from the cement killingthe polymers. The worst trip I ever had off shore was when that happened at the end of a contract and we didn't have enough acid on board. The polymers burned off with the high pH and the drilling fluid turned to sludge.)

Yeah, we've used sugar as a RMX retarder.

Funnily enough, we're now part owned by a Vinci company. :|
