Does life without parole actually reduce the number of appeals? Both sentences seem to leave a guy with nothing much to lose. Unless you make death the forfeit for losing an appeal against life without P. But I think there would be grounds to appeal that if you did.

Michael Portillo did a program a few years ago on the death penalty. He went through all of the issues with all the current methods (all of which are flawed to some degree) and then mentioned another method which has never been used, namely Inert Gas Asphyxiation. All it requires is to pump the room full of nitrogen (doesn't even need to be sealed off) and the person dies painlessly (actually in a state of euphoria if memory serves) and then all you have to do afterwards is open the window to make the room safe.
