It will also eliminate many risks for the company over the next few years as well. It might have also been easier outside the control of a Tory government wanting to cut unions down still further.

If that's a 5 year ceasefire so management and unions can work out a joint plan to do more (invest, reallocate capital, restructure for lower volumes of mail and higher volumes of parcels), then I might have to take back my scepticism about their prospects when they were sold off.

The deal required (for once I agree with Amnesia) couldn't have been done with Tories for lack of trust. Probably couldn't have been done with Labour either though because it would be too politically risky, it might well sever the last of their relationship with the unions.
