There were loads of rumours about this recently and if they have bought up that many screens it shows that is one feature that we can be sure of in the next iPhone.

The integrated heart rate sensor, which sits beside the flash just below the camera, works with the smartphone’s other sensors to track fitness and health using Samsung’s new S Health 3, which works as a pedometer while in the pocket.

I use a Withings Pulse for a pedometer and that is considerably lighter than having to carry a phone all the time. Plus I can use mine in my sleep.

The ability to pay for things with a finger swipe is useful but since I cannot be as sure that my phone is more secure than my computer I still prefer to use my computer to make payments.

I'm not convinced of the use of a heart sensor in this manner for most people. There are occasional reasons why you might want a 'spot' heart rate reading, but not many of them are part of most people's daily lives. For people who are interested in monitoring heart rate as part of a fitness regime, having a single unit measure at the end of an activity is significantly less use than having frequent samples of heart rate while performing an activity. The fact they've upgraded the Gear with heart monitoring tech is a pretty good idea but slapping a heart rate sampler on the back of someone's phone really isn't much practical use at all.

I'm finding the use of a phone as a pedometer to be 'better than nothing' but if the fitbit flex I was using hadn't turned out to be woefully inaccurate I'd also much rather prefer one of those kind of devices as a solution. That' why I'm paying attention to the likes of the Razer Nabu and Jaybird Reign.

These kind of functions need to be in wearable discrete tech, not in a whopping great phone that barely fits in your pocket.

Storage wars: do we really need microSD cards in our phones?

http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and ... s--1219436

My phone certainly needs one but only because apps are so ridiculously bloated these days. And yes, I do suspect it helps to crash my phone far too often, but try getting the right combination of features and cost without a bank loan... Bigger internal storage would be great but I'm still liable to plug the phone into a computer anyway.

What a crock of crap!

What happened to loading things into RAM from slow storage?

And as for uploading it to the cloud - I'm going to stream a video over 3G every time I want to see it am I?

Bollocks.

Re Wifi Direct.
Quote:
Much like you have password protection on your home network, you don't want any Thomas, Richard or Henry to be able to connect to your stuff. You won't want to see what the neighbours are beaming to their TV on your TV nor do you want them being able to use your printer.
In order to prevent this, Wi-Fi Direct uses Wi-Fi Protected Setup [PDF] and WPA2 to prevent unauthorised connections thus keeping your communications private.
Pairing devices can be done in multiple ways; physical buttons - "press the button on gadget X and then the same one on gadget Y", with PIN codes, QR Codes or even NFC.

As long as you can be secure it would make a lot more sense. Since all my passport devices are local it would make sense to sync them all locally automatically without having to resort to drop box or the cloud.
