I've finally jumped ship - Android's OS no longer fills me with hate (TBH it hasn't done since 4.xx launched), and I've ditched the iphone.

What technical marvel turned my head? The cheap as chips Moto G. It's early days, because I only got it this afternoon, but I think it's bloody lovely.

I'm no mobile power user - I don't do the social networking stuff, I don't twitter and I have no idea what WhatsApp actually does (though I've been told I MUST get it) - so it'll be interesting to see how much life a light user can squeeze out of this battery. I can usually get my iphone 4 to last from Monday morning to Friday night, though I seriously doubt I'll see anything like that with a quad core processor and 4.5" screen...

There is no wrong answer when it comes to a phone if it does what you want. As long as you can get the apps that you need that is all that matters. Have fun with it.

So say we all (or at least we should).

I think most here would echo that thought.

The days of vitriolic debate about phones/os etc are more in the dennis forums.

The vitriol tends now to be about politics and economics. How times have changed lol

WhatsApp is good if you normally get charged for text or photo messages, or if you want a group chat with the lads/workplace. It's outside of the usual suspects which is why FaceBook bought it... For now at least it's great. It only costs 60p a year and is free for the first year IIRC. A single picture text used to cost me 50p!

It's only when you start using it do you appreciate how useful it is.

Over here everybody seems to be abandoning WhatsApp, it got a bad reputation due to its atrocious security record (originally no security at all, everything sent in the clear, then using RC4 (the weakest form of SSL there is and cracked several years ago) and the fact the API is open to anyone and you can pole it with several thousand calls a second to retrieve telephone numbers of users on the service) and it being sold to Facebook seems to have been the last straw - many people who were using it were using it, because it wasn't Facebook.

Telegram and Threema seem to be the big winners out of the sale to Facebook (other than Jan Koum). Telegram uses fairly good security and Threema allows you to swap public keys with other users face-to-face, so that the service has no clue as to your keys and messages can only be decrypted on your device.

I know any number of people who have gotten blatant spam through WhatsApp (somehow) and have forwarded it to me, which obviously doesn't help

Whatsapp does the same as Viber. The difference it Whatsapp will charge you after a year.
That said however, I prefer whatsapp as a personal preference.

In a nutshell is I combo of free instant messaging and a forum. You can send messages to individuals or groups. Anyone in the group can see everything than anyone else posts in the group.
