A US businessman who lost $500,000 (£298,000) at a Las Vegas casino says he should not have to pay - because he was too drunk.
Californian Mark Johnston has sued the Downtown Grand for serving him drinks and lending him money while he says he was clearly intoxicated.
The 52-year-old arrived at the casino on 30 January and played at the tables for 17 hours.
Under Nevada law, patrons who are visibly drunk are not meant to gamble.
The casino, which has not commented, reportedly intends to legally pursue Mr Johnston for the debt.

While I accept the casino may or may not have broken the law, the question I have is, would he have given the winnings back (as he was too drunk to legally gamble) if he had won big rather than lost big? Some how I doubt it.

Given that the casinos have CCTV up to thier Wazzoos it should be easy to tell how drunk he "looked"

after all as its says

so it should show him (or not) staggering/ falling asleep / being sick / wild uncordinated movements etc

Mr Johnston says the Downtown Grand served him 20 alcoholic beverages during his gambling session,

Just over one drink an hour. Unless they were massive drinks, he shouldn't have been that drunk, even allowing for teh drinks he had on the flight.

20 drinks of unknown strength (IIRC there is no measures act in the US and it's in their interest to get the patrons half-cut as they make worse/more impulsive decisions) over an extremely long period of time. I know when I'm tired it hits a lot harder, without going outside/air con I'm sure I'd be pretty far gone.

I guess if he won he would have been strongly persuaded to stay until he lost it all again (comp rooms, food, more drink etc)

Partial disclaimer: I intend to absolutely hammer the free drinks for gamblers policy a few places have for predrinks when I go over there, penny slots and a $1/drink tip... cheap night out :D

Good point. I'd forgotten about their lack of measures.

While I love a drink I never drink and gamble. Luckily for me I am not that bothered about gambling.

I plan to do both, but not 'serious' gambling. I plan to literally pee my money away in free drinks ;)

I would probably do both. While I am a member of a couple of casinos my prime reason for being a member is the restaurant. So if in Vegas I would have a punt on one of the big prize fruit machines, though probably only a couple of spins. I would also have goes on the tables but probably no more than a few dollars in total. So my risks of losing everything I own are nil. 8-)
