I'm exactly the opposite tbh

There is one thing that has to be mentioned in all this. People who don't have a fast enough internet connection should be getting a discount as they can't use the online services

The licence fee is not a charge for the services they provide to specifically you or me, it's a communal payment to provide a revenue stream for the BBC to provide services to everyone. You don't get a reduction in VED just because you don't drive on all roads. This is the same.

I'm not saying it should be. I merely saying the loss of BBC 3 (and 4 should they choose to dicth it) would be no real loss given the low viewing figures.

How about getting a discount because you cannot drive on all roads? You get a reduction in VED if you drive a vehicle such as a tractor that is not allowed on certain roads.

TV licence discounts are available if you are blind or have a black and white TV. These are people who cannot access the full range of services and so get a discount. The online services are no different.

It's better than that - Let us close BBC3 or we put a bullet through Sherlocks forehead and and shut off the containment field on the Eye of Harmony in the TARDIS.

In other news - Which BBC Channel Are You?

Why would BBC talk funding of some of their most profitable shows? I can't believe those don't make a huge profit for the company

I really wouldn't know how profitable they are. They get shown in the states on BBC America so I don't think they get a lot in licensing from that and I couldn't say if they are sold to lots of countries the way say Top Gear is. I also suspect Who at least is massively expensive to make.

Of the two channels 'under threat', I'd imagine the BBC4 style shows bring in more than the BBC3 style ones do. History/Documentary shows are an easy sell abroad, admittedly for very low fees, but edgy experimental comedy and reality TV are probably unsellable outside the UK.

Over here we get a few documentaries, Inspector Barnaby, Jamie Oliver and that's about it... The UK doesn't seem to export much over here at all.

Oh, and that thing with the time rifts and dinosaurs.

Well, there's a lot of money to be made from BBC Worldwide.
I know that article is a few years old, but it at least provides some supporting evidence for the profitability of the shows.

Mark

EDIT - A much more recent article specifically concentrating on Doctor Who.
