Old one was H-IPS or S-IPS, new one is PVA. Its a crafty cost reduction.

Got a link?
All I'm finding from April 09 is that they're IPS, the LG LM240WU2 in fact.

Oooh yeah curious.
Still, hardly an issue unless you're doing colour accurate work. I'd guess it's not an issue for your average home user.
As far as I can tell, Apple are using H-IPS.
The issue with the backlighting might be something else, rather than the panel per se.
Still, moot point, as I'd go with the Pro as you suggested. :)

Just to throw things into the mix again...

£499 for the entry level mac mini.

Minus £145 for using Education Pricing

Means a brand new Mac Mini for just under £355.

Obviously it's not as advanced as a mac pro, but it's PC-cheap!

The £145 off only applies if you buy an ipod touch at the same time from what I can see

Ooh that's sneaky. Their wording was "Buy a Mac for your studies and an iPod touch can be yours". Now THIS is why I hate apple so much >.<

Turns out the Mac Mini isn't a "qualifying" mac.

The iPod shuffle and Nano both entitle you to a "rebate" but probably not the whole £145.

So yeah. Sorry. I'll hush up now.

Thanks all, I think I'll get an entry-level Macbook Pro and buy it through the Uni. network and upgrade the HDD and RAM myself. I also love the idea of free 3-year AppleCare. :D

Sounds like a plan. When I buy a Mac, I tend to get the lowest specs I can live with in terms of RAM and Hard Dic capacity. I usually opt for a better processor and graphics card than the default on offer. I then run (not walk) to Crucial and buy the RAM I really want, thus saving me more than enough cash for a replacement hard drive.

I think upgrading a hard drive on a new MacBook Pro is better than my model (Apple do not supply instructions for mine....). Just looked at the manual for the current model. It’s criminally easy. You do need a screwdriver, though.

I upgraded an HD on an iBook for a friend once. I had to take the machine to bits completely to do that.

Ooh, we never saw that coming.

Oh bugger, now I am jealous of Gav. I didn't see that coming either.

Tee hee!

Liking it so far, still don't like the lack of delete key other than backspace and the @ key is in the wrong place, but it's quite nice to type on and once you've picked one of the other screen calibration options the screen is very nice too. It's a bit washed out by default. Don't like magsafe either - pops out too easily!

Have you put Vista or Linux on it yet?

Press fn and backspace for forward delete; the latter you will get used to. It still throws me when I use a non-Apple keyboard. I end up with " instead of @ in email addresses!
