A cup of or are you referring to an meal most people incorrectly call dinner?

Indeed, it's called supper by all right-thinking people ;-)

If its around 4 pm then its High Tea
If its at home and informal then its Supper
If its a formal Party or out to a posh retaurant then its Dinner

and the midday meal is Lunch and not Dinner (for those of you who are of a more Northern disposition) ;)

So.... it goes

Breakfast
Elevenses
Lunch
Tea
Supper (or Dinner)
Midnight snack
:D

Wrong. It goes:

Breakfast
Lunch
Tea

Dinner is simply the biggest meal of the day

Oh look. It's the old Breakfast, Dinner, Tea and Supper argument again.
And wouldn't you know it, the troll that started it all (Carolyn) isn't anywhere to be seen.
What a shocker. <-- Sarcasm.

Hifidelity is almost right, although High Tea was missing. (And if you are a Hobbit, I probably missed half a dozen other meals.)

Dinner is the main meal of the day. Tea and high tea are light snacks in the afternoon and early evening, supper is a more substantial meal in the evening.

Dinner is generally taken at Lunch time or for Supper. As going to a restaurant in the evening is usually the main meal for most people, it is called going out for dinner. Likewise, because most people work and eat light at lunch these days, supper has become dinner for many people.
