The problem is that is for the whole country and anyone in London / SE is going to be up near the top just because of the cost of housing

Unless you're a landlord, the cost of housing isn't going to contribute to your gross income is it?

I'm around the ninth decile.

I think the point was more that salaries are so much higher due to cost of living etc.

How anyone below 6th decile would survive in London is beyond me. I am in 9th decile and I know that I couldn't afford not to live in a shared flat or have a car.
saying that, rental prices in outer London boroughs seems to be coming down marginally. Average seems to have dropped from £1250 a month to £1100 for a 1/2 bed flat.

Well I am considerably higher than I thought, 8th decile with my gf, but we've got very low living costs compared to London (3 bed semi in a nice area is under £600 a month)

It was similar when I moved to Germany, I went from £1300 for a 49 SqM flat in Woking to £1100 for 98 SqM outside Munich to £275 for 110 SqM in Bramsche.

I am self employed, herself has a reasonable income, but we have a mortgage and associated bills which don't exactly make me feel comfortably well off. It's a rat race baby.

Same but the other way - when I lived in Sheffield I was on a lot lower salary but the house cost me £25K to buy - Now down in the SE on a good salary but the cost of the house..... :x
