Basically, you get to switch your work kit off at 6pm. http://www.theguardian.com/money/shortc ... -of-office

My smartphone pushes email until 19:00, then it is on manual until 06:00 and at weekends, and it sits in the kitchen, when I am at home.

I switch mine off as I leave the office and back on on the train into work - simples Work can call me as often as they like but I am not paid to be on call so I am not on call

It's a good idea. I know of a few senior managers and directors who will fire out emails to their underlings at all hours of the day/night/weekend, fully expecting a prompt reply.

Friend of mine who I happen to work with has just gone on a two week holiday to Japan. He's taken his work mobile phone with him. I am sodding livid about it.

I think smartphones, next to mobile phones have to be one of the worst inventions of the last couple of decades, along with one of the best.

Well done France. I will not however be holding my breath for anything similar on this side of the channel. I'd be cross about that as well because it raises the expectation in management that this is acceptable and eventually normal and erodes the subsequent ability of others to refuse.

If I didn't check my work email from time to time, I would have to do more planning for every task I rely on others to carry out while I am off shift. I would have to invest work time in bringing stakeholders into all of my stuff, including the tedious details that I CBA with delegating. It would make my job more laborious and annoying, so I don't think I would benefit.

I can see that logic but it's not actually why I'm angry. The particular job he does at our place is quite stressful - in fact it made the bloke who did it before him rather ill. He's a stronger character than his predecessor but still to me it looks like the start of a slippery slope. Basically, I think we all need time away from work to be healthy.

In a previous role, I was paid for out of hours cover - I don't mind that, as it was on a rota basis and I knew when I might be required to work on something. My current boss can contact me out of hours if he needs to, and I'm ok with that because I know HE won't abuse it. He only does it for emergency situations, and never emails me out of hours unless we've spoken on the phone and I need further info.

Sadly this article was debunked. It's not a regulation, only some tech companies' decision. The Gruniad need to verify their sources :S
