Am I going to see much benefit if I upgrade the RAM in my MBP to 4GB (from 2GB)?
Also, would this void my lovely 3 year AppleCare?

It won't void your warranty I would say you would benefit...But only because I would... Do you use lots of apps at the same time? Do you do demanding things? If so, yes... Also, if ZFS comes to OS X client at some point, it'll probably be a bit more RAM hungry than HFS+...

To me it makes sense, four years ago 1GB was considered about standard, over the last two or three years we've seen 2GB become the standard, and now 4GB computers are becoming more and more common.

True, I can well remember the days when 256MB was the norm. and anything over 512MB was "excessive". Hell, my first computer was an Intel Pentium 133MHz! I can't even remember how much RAM that had, but it couldn't have been any more than 32MB, perhaps 64MB at a stretch!

When I think back, it's amazing how I coped with an old 400MHz Intel thing with 64MB of memory...I used to run Firefox, Flash, Fireworks and Dreamweaver all at the same time, and had to make sure I did everything I could in one app before I switched to another because in the space of time it took to switch from one to another I could make a cup of tea

:sigh: Oh for the halcyon days when applications were written properly. Do people not realise what a massive amount of RAM a gigabyte is? [/sniff]

If you use iStat Menus it will tell you what RAM is being used. If you are using a lot then you will benefit from more.

My first Mac had 128KB! And my fist computer had 1KB!

Seeing as this is on the "More RAM" train of thought, I figured it'd be better not to start a new topic but just hijack this one briefly.
Turns out the RAM I bought wasn't SDRAM as was in the description, but is RDIMM. Noticed this as soon as I got it, as it's about half the height of normal DDR.
Is it safe to put in my brand new spanking Power Mac G5?

I don't know! Your G5 won't boot if it's unhappy with the RAM. I don't think you'll likely damage the mobo in anyway, but it might kernel panic. In other news, I thought this might be of interest - http://www.barefeats.com/memory.html
