http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-g ... t-27939845OMFG, a Scot cheered when Suarez scored! Find out who he is so we can have someone to hate. Heaven forbid a non-english person has the audacity to support someone else.

Got no problem with a non-english person supporting their own team, or indeed any team they have an affinity for generally. However it's patently obvious that this guy's support is based not upon like, but upon dislike. He's not supporting Uruguay because they have good players and play good football (both of which are true), he's supporting 'the team that is trying to beat England' because he hates England. If you can't see why the former is positive but the latter is negative and why the latter is something that is irrational and deserves only derision, then I have only sympathy for you.

Honestly don't see why there's a problem. He's free to support anyone, even if he's just anti-English. Freedom of speech.

Thanks for the holier than thou BS. I expected better. My point was why should that be newsworthy? Would the BBC produce the article if it were a German fan? Spanish? Or if it were Scotland playing (yeah, yeah Scotland at the World Cup - this is a hypothetical argument) and the fan was English?

Well, it sounds like the fan in question previously travelled to South Africa for the 2010 WC to support Uruguay which suggests a slightly deeper reason for supporting them than just that they were playing England.

The great thing about sport is that it brings out the best in people.

What makes them racist? As far as bigotry goes, do you honestly think it's any different vice versa? I don't. You've never been in a pub and been surrounded by a bunch of sun reading knuckle-draggers all crying "anyone but those [LIFTED] jocks"? I'll wager your experience in Scotland was similar to that.

I'm not holier than thou. I am better than him. As to what you expect... I couldn't care less what your preconceptions are. Probably not, but then the Germans and Spanish (and Swiss and Chileans and etc etc..) don't seem to define a large chunk of their sporting and indeed national identity based upon hatred of another nation. It seems quite a lot of Scots do. You really think there's an England fan alive who, if the situations were reversed, would bother to travel to a stadium for a match between two teams he didn't support wearing a crusader outfit and carrying an England flag? And then stand in with the opposition's fans and celebrate waving his England flag if the opposition scored? I doubt that. Very much. And that's the difference. We don't define ourselves by the failures of others. That's exactly what he's doing. If you think that's something to be applauded, well, good luck to you.

Not racist. Nationalist surely? Unpleasant by either name, of course Yeah, I mean there's no recognised problem with bigotry in Scottish football at all is there I've never been Scots, obviously, but I've been in a Welsh pub when the Welsh played the English at rugby, I've been in a pub when England played someone else with Scottish friends with unmistakable accents and I've been in a Scottish pub when England played a qualifier against someone else. The latter was by far the worst experience. Jon

It seems you're reading a lot into the actions of that one man, and seemingly applying it to a nation. Wait, you actually think there isn't? There isn't a single person in England who would go to the same lengths as that guy? Again with the pious [LIFTED] - stop trying to make this about me - I wasn't supporting the guy, and I think he's a bit of a pillock. I was pointing out the disparity in the BBC.

My point was bigotry covers the accusation adequately. Calling someone racist when race has nothing to do with it is inflammatory. Yeah, it's all sweetness and light south of the border isn't it? I've been in pubs split between English and Scottish rugby fans during and after a match. Both crowds were singing their hearts out, trying to outdo each other. Not a drop of bad blood in sight - I found it quite uplifting, in stark contrast to sharing a pub with the fans of two rival football teams of any description, loyalty or nationality.

It said he also went to Africa to support Uruguay last time round. If he supports Uruguay in every match, not just against England, then he is supporting Uruguay, not hating on England...
