It was not so much how hard people found the challenge, but how far they would go to avoid it that left researchers gobsmacked. The task? To sit in a chair and do nothing but think.

So unbearable did some find it that they took up the safe but alarming opportunity to give themselves mild electric shocks in an attempt to break the tedium.

Two-thirds of men pressed a button to deliver a painful jolt during a 15-minute spell of solitude. One man – an outlier – found thinking so disagreeable he opted for a shock 190 times.

Under the same conditions, a quarter of women pressed the shock button. The difference, scientists suspect, is that men tend to be more sensation-seeking than women.

I'm (un)happy to say I lose myself in my head all the time, though I can't stand waiting rooms unless I can get a conversation going without it being weird.

Thoughts? (no pun intended)

A quarter of an hour just sitting and thinking isn't very long. I used to do it a lot.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I will happily sit in my chair and think. But I have to comfortable eg legs up, reclined back. I would have thought this would have been down to social media/phones making people have shorter attention spans and more difficulty passing the time but apparently not according to the report. I wonder whether it's just down to your personality/upbringing. eg I often played alone with toys and had (and still have) a vivid imagination. I've also spent many hours doing nothing (eg sitting on a bust journey to get to school for an hour). You learn to while away the time.

I think too much :( I blame a quite high level of anxiety so I can easily sit for hours and obsess over some details :(

I remember hearing a piece of ambient music once that had a section in it where the tune stopped and a voice told you to stop and listen to the music around you. It's a fascinating thing to do if you've got a minute. The world is full of sounds, melodies. Sit still, close your eyes and really listen some time.

I'd have no problem doing what the students were asked to do, but I do meditate anyway.

I'm like that. Knowing I'm doing it makes no difference :(
