Useful - and I've seen that before and done pretty much everything suggested, bar a trip to a Genius. Thing is I still get the phone draining power and getting warm when I'm out and about, and I'm not entirely sure why. I'm told that GPS daemons can get "stuck" - and certainly a restart seems to stop that if it gets too prolonged.
There are a lot of variables that are out of your control; for example you might not have good path to a cell tower and therefore have to put more juice in to the signal. Cell tower coverage is anything but uniform, mobile providers pay literally millions of pounds for specialist software that can predict signal strength at any given point in space which they use to plan cell tower coverage and even they are pretty rough estimates (most of the algorithms behind the software were developed by Vodafone in the UK in the infancy of mobile phones). It's very possible your phone could need to push out double the strength of signal as if you stood on the other side of the road. more power = more battery drain and more heat generated. Nothing you can do to predict it, and nothing you can do to reduce it other than move until you find a better spot.
