I have just procured myself 2 iMac G3's one 350mhz and one 600mhz. All for the sum of £11.35. That'll keep me tinkering.

Build quality is pretty good - some of the internals feel a bit plasticky but the case is excellent. Obviously it's second hand so it's not tip top condition, but it'll suit me fine. Heart skipped a beat when I saw the box, but figured that it was probably the only box they had or something >.<

Annoyingly I have no keyboard or mouse. I can connect it to the TV, but I don't have to cable *Sigh*

Hurah! I have something to contribute to this thread now...

Picked up my new MBP 13" on the weekend. I've spent a few days playing with it now and my first impressions are "ooo baby". Great looking machine, the screen is nice and vibrant. I thought 13" would be unbearably small, but the maximum resolution is the same as my old 15" laptop so it's not so bad. The keyboard has taken a bit of getting used to, but the backlighting is nice. The trackpad gestures are nicely explained in System Settings - the two fingered scroll gets a lot of use and I can use it like a trackpad with buttons - using the bottom right as left click and bottom left as main click with the left hand and doing the moving about with the right hand.

Battery life is something else! My previous laptop wouldn't boot without being plugged in, but I can't seem to kill the battery on this one...I get a good 5 hours out of it with a lot of heavy wifi use (transferring music from desktop PC to laptop over the network) and a fair bit of disc access (printer software!), but if it was just browsing the net I'm sure I'd get the full 7 out of it.

OSX isn't bad. I like the method for installing software - drag a DMG into the applications folder and that is it. One thing that does concern me is how it doesn't ask for a password to do that (from what I remember), so you could end up installing something nasty if you are not careful, whereas Ubuntu asks for a password to install anything - it's not going to stop an admin installing a nasty, but it may stop a user from messing things up. The menu bar takes a bit of getting used to as well - I initially forgot to look at the top menu for the options or preferences for some apps.

iLife is ok - Imovie and Iphoto are pretty cool, but iweb is disappointing, with no import function you can't fiddle with existing web pages - however, Seamonkey to the rescue, works just like the Linux version.

Oh, as an aside, it would have been nice for Apple to supply the obligatory card games!

The DMG is just the image file - you need to double click it, so that it'll mount on your desktop, then copy across the app. You should be prompted at some point as the where the file came from and whether or not you trust it to install.

Normally you open the dmg file on straight from the downloads folder.

You get your warnings and a window opens. There are often two icons, the icon for your app and a shortcut to your apps folder. Drag one onto the other and you are good to go. (Sometimes the shortcut is not there so you have to drag it to the applications folder manually).

The original dmg can then be ejected unless you intend to make a backup of it.

You're running as an admin user, so it doesn't ask you for your password to install apps. However, it will ask you for it whenever you try to do something that will alter the system. If you set up a non-admin account (under Users in System Preferences) and work in that account, it will ask you for your password whenever you install software.



It comes with chess. You're a Mac user now, card games are beneath you.

Hmm.

I want a Mac Pro case, and a Mac Mini case. I also want OSX.

What I refuse to pay for it the Apple/brand tax. Admittedly, there may be better support, easier to set up, but i don't need this.
