I'd be more interested if it worked with my Yubikey Neo as 2 factor authentication for LastPass and if it worked with my bank's app, so I could use it for contactless payments. You know,, like Android and Windows Phone have done for the last couple of years.

I rarely take video. I used my 1020 to take a video last week, and that was the first video since I bought it 6 months ago. On the other hand we have lots of large prints from photos I've taken hanging around the house. How good a camera takes pictures is important. That said, I've taken around a dozen or so pictures with my smartphone and a thousand or so with my DSLR...

Unless I've misunderstood they've done to NFC what they did to bluetooth . Deliberately cripple it and remove some of the best functionality from it.

Well, the latter is effectively ApplePay but we've had no word about that in the EU yet. There's LOTs of negotiations to be had there I suspect. As to the former that does sound a very good use of NFC yes. And I suspect it is one of those things that will come over time. My suspicion is it will be similar to what they've done with Touch ID - initially in iOS 7 Touch ID was an 'Apple app only' technology, but in iOS 8 there are API's that allow you to use Touch ID authentication in your app, without actually giving access to the 'metal' of the Touch ID system. I suspect NFC will follow a similar route - initially it will only be usable in very prescribed ways but in a year or so an API will be available that will allow it to be used by third party apps. This is the way Apple do things. This is the way Apple have done things from the very beginning of the iPhone. Expecting them to do things differently at this point is tilting at windmills. Plus, let's be honest, looking at your competitor's best features and re-engineering them into your own product in your own way over time is what every major phone OS supplier has been doing since day one.

ApplePay, as far as I am aware runs over Apple, not my bank... And you probably need to register a credit card with the account, so two sets of transaction fees.

Given you can have multiple credit cards on ApplePay but (IIRC) only one credit card connected to an iTunes account, I think it's not the same system as iTunes. Given you can do touch transactions with a card that has no internet capability and no CPU, I don't think Apple's servers need to see the transaction data (iirc they stated in the presentation they don't see any of the actual transaction data). Put it this way - why should the phone be doing anything a contactless credit card isn't doing? The conversation with your bank happens via the shop's terminal, not your device/card.

Yeah apple doesn't see any information about the transaction. Apple doesn't even know the card number used or the amount spent or where you were. They transmit a number that is generated at the time of registering the card and that's all.
On a complete side note in currently using the SwiftKey keyboard for ios 8 and it's fracking awesome!!!
It's the one thing I've wanted in ios since I saw it years ago!

It still doesn't help with typos though, so what's the point in changing? (8+p Mark

Lol, I'm still getting used to it. The more I use it the more it leans about how I type and is better able to predict what I meant.

The NFC cards have a processor, as do Chip and PIN cards... That is how they generate a unique token for every transaction, which the terminal checks over the Internet (or modem direct) with the card transaction centre. The talk from Apple so far implies that they are brokering the transaction. They aren't getting a list of what you bought, but they are verifying the transaction token.
