What's funny is that I friendzoned a girl back at uni. She ended up marrying a guy who looked a lot like me. To the point where even my sisters were confused by the photo of couple. If I had been working at that point, it might have been me. But when you're a student, you have limited finances and a wedding would have been wholly unaffordable.

Why the wink?
Are you trying to say that they aren't actually interesting reactions?
We are just giving our opinions on the article, which is more than you've done so far.
How about instead of trolling you tell us your opinion of the link you posted without comment? (8+)

Not all of us are laughing.

It's not really a particularly tongue-in-cheek article, there's no indication that it's a joke or clever satire or anything. Clearly just a page filler that doesn't mean anything and therefore nothing to see here. The concept is ridiculous and if written with the gender roles reversed would have caused some sort of hysterical outcry.

If it's such a ridiculous idea, why all the knee jerk reactions?

Possibly for the same reason that all the females would freak out if the roles were reversed. It's effectively undermining almost half of the relationships that men have because their female partner may or may not have a 'back-up' in case it doesn't work out. It's ridiculous because I don't believe the statistics, I know lots of women personally and even more remotely and the suggestion of a back-up has never come up, therefore statistically speaking the numbers don't hold water, I'd like to see a link to the study. It's coming across as another 'feminist' way to make men behave differently in relationships which is game-playing and I'm not surprised it's causing such a reaction in the forums men. If I were a man I would feel the same way. If the article was aimed at women in the same way, I would still feel the same way.

It's not such a ridiculous idea at all, from where I'm standing. I feel like I'm always the back up plan, but never the main event. And frankly I'm bored with that.
Whether it's intentional or not, I couldn't say, but the expression 'never let go of one branch until you're holding another' holds some water.

Would anyone, however how close, tell you if they had feelings for someone apart from their partner? Really?

Some of the people I know would be so proud of it that they would also have told their current partner with a view to "keeping him in line"

This. If someone did that to me I'd be out the door so fast you'd think I was Neo from the Matrix films.

I'd suggest the primary reason the article link was posted was to see what sort of reaction it would get. And it got one. Quelle surprise...

Agreed! I truly wonder at some of the things people think it's reasonable to do in relationships but game-playing and point-scoring of any kind are an instant deal-breaker for me.

Your point is a bit melodramatic no? Of course if someone uses this kind of blackmail in a relationship they need dumping.
More sensibly, if you've been in a long term relationship that is on its last legs, it can be terrifying to break it off and face being alone when you haven't been single for years/decade. Getting close to a potential date and know that they will be there when you have made the jump can help break a moribund relationship.
I think it's similar to quitting your job vs quitting your job with another one lined up

I can see the argument but I don't think they're all that similar. A Job is, essentially, a transaction. You have a skill and someone pays you money to perform that skill for them. That's it really. So there's no real social stigma to looking for a new job while you're in one. A relationship isn't just a transaction. If I was in a relationship and I started chatting up other women, a lot of people - and not just my other half - would take that quite badly. Equally so if my other half started flirting with other men. We don't really have the concept of 'cheating' on your employer, that's the difference.

Aside from that, it was the way the whole article was phrased that I had an issue with. Supposedly it's an article about women, but in fact it's entirely aimed at men. It's all about trying to make men feel less secure in their relationships, to create a perceived power imbalance. It's actually kind of creepy.
