My initial concern from the headline was about how one would actually trust a company that makes money from data mining and advertising to provide genuine obscurity, but as far as I can see Facebook still get all their data, it's just everyone else that won't.

Yes, it isn't so much about providing you with the option of obscurity, more about giving them exclusivity. It suddenly makes the data they hold a far more valuable commodity.

I don't use Facebook apps anymore. They kept wanting more and more permissions for things they didn't need to work.
