Would you use a supermarket that didn't stock brands?

Founder of easyJet pledges 50p average price in his low-budget foodstore

I've found just about everything tastes different/worse than it used to recently, but I've yet to find cheap alternatives that didn't taste like crap compared to the 'originals', so it's a 'no' from me.

I've no idea, but aren't they kind of their own brand?

Lid also stocks brand names, although a lot is own brand.

Aldi is pretty much exclusively own brand products. Here, such stores are called discounters, not supermarkets.

I thought Lidl didn't have a brand? I certainly haven't seen anything with Lidl on the packaging.

Lidl (like the 99p stores) have lots of brands but don't put their name on them. The random brands are quite often owned by the company but they look better to customers than big stickers saying Lidl (or 99p store)

I have had an ongoing on-off experiment, which has been running for over 10 years, where I will buy the Smart Price / Basics versions of various foods, and compare them to branded goods.

It's not very scientific, and there is no blind testing, but the quality of the "cheap" stuff has definitely improved over the past few years, to the extent that I am happy with no-brand goods. It's only the wife and two thirds of the kids who are fussy buggers, though in fairness, I am slowly winning the wife over!

Milbona, Lord Nelson, Dulano and the other products you find are all Lidl own brand, the same for Aldi, most products have their own 'name' but are Aldi own brand. But Lid also sell some brand name products, such as Head and Shoulders, Persil, Coca Cola etc.

Clever marketing there. I always assumed Lidl etc just stocker foreign brands that were cheaper. I never know they were owned by Lidl.

I do tend to go for own brands where possible due to cost, but some things just can't be beaten on taste.
