Is it just me or is that dead now?

Used to send and receive them all the time - has Facebook killed them?

You mean a joke by text message?
Early 2000's? Possible the late 90's?
No, early 2000's it is.

It's only in the last year mine stopped. They tended to be whoever was in the news that week.

Don't know. Can't say I ever remember receiving a joke via SMS.

I thought the thread title was pretty self-explanatory! When did someone last send you a joke, by whatever means, to your phone?

The title's fine - it's just that this is not a thing that I've heard of. Do people actually do this?

Not anymore Rusty, but it used to be a big thing, you'd receive a joke as a text msg on your phone and then forward it on to your friends. I remember it being very popular back before smart phones and I used to get them all the time on my old Nokia.

Definitely around 2001 or so when most teens/young adults started having phones. I reckon up until I got my k800i. Don't remember too many jokes with that phone onwards. I wonder if it was to do with cameras on phones by then or something. Certainly around that time people were using phones for music and photos and maybe games. That time I recall tied in with the start of facebook. Back then you had to state that you went to university to be able to sign up.

I have a theory that we now digest so much humour that jokes are less funny, too predictable... it's not that there's a different technology... it's that we've all become connoisseurs of jokes.

That said, I got a joke a couple of years ago, via text, because I have two brothers who didn't use Facebook at the time. This being the exception to the rule:

"Ugly scenes outside the Etihad. Lescott and Tevez just arrived."

Yeah, the whole meta thing had crossed my mind too - I'm utterly sick of comedians telling us they're doing a routine. Just because the subconscious knows it doesn't mean you should actually say it. Also, popular culture is so increasingly tragic that it must be hard to parody! Probably why everything from your childhood can now be taken semi-seriously and make a billion dollars at the box office.

I still receive them occasionally, and I still forward them.

I still receive them from two people and they are usually... Who am I kidding...? They are always NSFW. Or anywhere else, for that matter lol

Sent from my big ass Sony Xperia Z Ultra tabphonelet, using Tapatalk 4.
