It's only anecdotal, but I know any number of women who seem fascinated by murderers and serial killers on TV and IRL. Ranging from Dexter to Fred West via those actual CSI documentaries. I wonder if cases like this are the logical extreme of that.

I'm sure there was a discussion about this on QI a few series back. In short, there's a psychological condition whereby the person finds themselves attracted to people who are dangerous. I seem to recall it's overwhelmingly a female thing (ie very few men suffer from it).
