I'm considering getting a controller to play GTA v, Elite and Assassins Creed, they don't feel right on keyboard/mouse, no one makes games really these days that work well with them.

GTA V and Assassin's Creed work fine for me on mouse / keyboard (I've not played GTA V itself, but given how similar it is in terms of viewport to something like Skyrim, I'd be reasonably comfortable with it). The only games that completely fails for me are racing games, and I suspect Elite would be similar but I've not played a flight simulator at all on mouse and keyboard since Descent II!

I play Skyrim on Mouse / Keyboard and find that (for me) the best way
The old Elite was pure keyboard, but they have added so many extra controls that I think a Joystick (or control pad) is probably needed

In general, the last games I've played on PC have been Dishonored and Splinter Cell. Both were well suited to keyboard/mouse. Certainly GTA:VC lent itself well to keyboard/mouse and was more difficult when I tried to play it on a console.

I've always wanted a Thrustmaster joystick. I bought a Saitek X52 about six years ago and it's been in storage for the last five.

Descent and Descent II were awesome games.

I used to play Elite on the BBC with a joystick. It seemed to work better than with a keyboard. I can’t remember if the crazily named BitStick that Acorn released worked with it too - it probably did. The analog joysticks that you could buy from Acorn (ANH01 models) worked really well, with one stick doing directional control, and the other doing thrust.

I am told that a PlayStation like controller is also pretty good for Elite Dangerous.

I can't remember the last time I used a joystick. I did have a PC one as I remember using one to play Rogue Squadron. But I'm sure it was long before USB, the joystick plugged into a special port on my sound card.

Game port. Sound cards use to have a game port.
