No any link that will open in a new window should carry a warning. Reality is 90% don't. I don't see it as a problem as most assistive technologies these days will warn a user anyway.

Re. the whole link/page opening thing.

By default, my mouse middle button opens things in new tabs.
Except here, it seems, and a few other sites that I tend not to visit any more.
It drives me nuts. I hate having a new window open when my default is a new tab.

Just my tuppence worth.

That's interesting Prof as my middle click still opens in a new tab here, what theme/browser are you using?

Has the problem not been fixed? Any link I left click opens in a new tab.

I'm using Google Chrome.

And for those of you that asked, there's now a gaming forum.

The one where you click on a link somebody has posted, and it opens in the same tab as the forum instead of a new one.

Is that not what was being discussed, or am I yet again slow on the uptake?

Safari 3.2.1 (typical bloomin' Mac Users, eh?)
Firefox doesn't seem to have the issue.

Yet again slow on the uptake ;)

That was resolved yesterday, and all links should now open in a new window/tab. Try Me

I doubt phpbb is standards complaint (XHTML), but I know that under XHTML 1.1 there is no way to open new tabs by default. Reading the spec it was part of the design, that the user should have control of how their browser handles events.

Given the fact that my web dev knowledge just about covers how to make tables in HTML can you not just set the target for a link to be "blank"? Or has that been got rid of?

In XHTML 1.1 Strict, it’s gone. In XHTML 1.1 Transitional, it is allowed. The XHTML spec says that the user should control how/when the browser opens new windows. No mention of a text warning, as far as I am aware. Using the target attribute in a link will cause a validation fail.

Yup, new window instead of a new tab, like my prefs say it should.
Bizarre.

Typical. I'm totally strung out and dozy at the moment. Slept in this morning and very nearly missed one of my pupil's test this morning. Thankfully we made it in time, she wasn't angry with me, and she passed.

I see, apologies as thats because of some of my coding on the forums. Afraid that's going to stay like it is for the time being, sorry! :|

I'm on Firefox (the latest version) and also Safari (beta 4) and they both now open links into a new Tab (not a new Window).

Thanks for sorting it guys :D

Having just read the film thread, would it be possible to add a spoiler control? I know it's yet another feature to a rapidly expanding set, and we need to be careful to avoid niche features and bloat, but I reckon it could be useful. An example plug-in is here. As always, it's not an urgent or important one, just a thought for once the basic stuff is stable.

Cool, with 10.5.7 round the corner, I can hang on for the full Safari 4 release. :)

This is not a moan, but is it worth considering making the board index seem less cluttered?

I'm thinking:

Hifi/AV

Gaming

We also used to have a fair amount of discussion in the old MacUser forum about hiving off an iTunes/iPod/iPhone section.
