Doh. The quotes for our extension are a lot higher than we expected. I suspect we will either have to abandon the plans or increase our mortgage.

I often look at extensions and wonder what people really get from it for the cost and hassle

Obviously, but unless it's becoming a room you'll use quite often or properly need, or a real passion project costing a fortune as opposed to the belief anyone will give a sh1t when you're selling it... For a lot of people it seems to be something else to decorate and to say they've got an extension, I can understand if it's actually practical

This one floor extension would almost double the ground floor area of our house, not to mention solving the condensation issue with have with the flat concrete roof on top of our current kitchen.

Got my building work done by a builder 60 miles away at half the cost of the original quote with twice as much work done.

£1250/m² is a reasonable price these days. Any more and the specification is very high or access is severely restricted. Ground work dramas are also pricey

I would have used my parents builder, but he\s retired now. Though he has offered to fit the kitchen on the cheap.

Cheap options when talking about construction works is never a good idea. You definitely get what you pay for a lot of the time
