I'd imagine you could make madeleines as the base and the chocolate is easy but the orangey bit strikes me as the kind of thing you can't make without industrial chemistry.

I'm pretty sure the orangy bit in Jaffa Cakes is made from apricot jam (with added orange oil). They must add gelatine to make it set solid.
I kind of want to see a picture of the disasterous Jaffas now.

I followed a recipe. I screwed up the base and quickly also discovered chocolate doesn't stick to jelly. And melted chocolate turns jelly into liquid. And liquid turns the sponge base into mush.

Hence the Agar agar to set the jelly as it's not heat sensitive http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agar

The recipes I remember for Jaffa cakes advise you to melt the choc and then let it cool slightly before adding it. Also worth making the jelly thicker.

The best place to look for ways to set the orangey bit is probably this (freely downloadable) recipe book http://blog.khymos.org/recipe-collection/

Some lorry driver (not local IIRC) who turned left off Grovesnor street in Manchester onto Oxford road. That turning has a traffic island/pedestrian island in the middle and his massive humungous lorrie's turning circle wouldn't allow him to get round the corner without driving over it. Given it had several large metal posts on it that wasn't an option. So he spent 15 minutes (seriously, I was in the queue behind him and I timed it) wiggling back and forth until he was able to get out of the jackknife he'd put himself in and carry on along another route.
Seriously, if you don't know how to drive the thing, DON'T DRIVE IT.

So I'm finally getting a new PC at work to replace the Win XP Core 2 job I've got at the moment. Now, The monitor I've got is perfectly servicable (BenQ GW2255) and is connected to the PC by a DVI cable. The new PC apparently doesn't have DVI connectors (does have displayport though) so they're going to use...VGA. I'm still vaugely bemused that anyone still makes stuff with VGA connections tbh. Can't help thinking this is a bit of a step backwards. I'm inclined to bring in a DP to DVI cable.

We have just replaced some thin clients with Optiplex PCs (preparation for the new VOIP telephone system). They also have only DisplayPort. We bought a bunch of DVI/DisplayPort adapters for a fiver each on Amazon, they work a treat.
