This bit genuinely gets my goat. Yes, he's given great service to 'the city' - and, let's not forget, been paid a humungous amount of cash to do it - but he's done absolutely feck all for 'his country'. He's not served in sodding Iraq has he? There are squaddies earning £20k a year who have done a hundred times what he ever has for 'his country'. There's not one iota of 'duty' in anything he's been asked to do. Apart from anything else, he could have made a much bigger service to his country by making sure his clients paid their sodding taxes.
