Germany is a very big supporter of apprenticeships and they don't have enough businesses with open positions for school leavers to take an apprenticeship.
We have around 55 employees and 10% are apprentices, but we probably get 3 times as many applicants as we take on.
The government subsidises it, but you still have to set aside full time employees to coach them and then you lose them for 1 or 2 days a week for school.

I think apprenticeship is a good thing but, I wonder if they're used to replace permanent staff. I know my brother got fired and replaced after his apprenticeship ended

We keep around 40% of our apprentices. Those that are good stay, those that are bad or just mediocre don't.

That's the problem - it opens yet another avenue for companies to exploit, which will reduce the perceived worth of doing an apprenticeship.
