I have a samsung american style fridge / freezer and it is rubbish.
It's very noisy (not great when we have a family room / kitchen / dining room combo) and it also freezes up. Of course YMMV.

good point, if you have an open plan kitchen/ living room, find the quietest washing machine and fridge you can.

Door heights and width? no point buying a corner sofa if you can't get it in

We still have my wife's old freezer and fridge in the cellar. They are there for big family events, then they are turned on to store meat for grilling or for cakes, buffet dishes etc.

I'm not the only one then :)

Does anyone have experience of American style fridgefreezers? Quite like the look of them.

Yep. Even has what I call a 'piss head flap' so you can get wine in and out of the fridge without opening the main door. Don't think it can be used for beer (never have any anyway) so the future Mrs Wolf will like it :D

I went for plumbed option so I have a constant supply of cold water and ice.

Things to consider:
If it's just two of you, how much food do you actually need to store in a fridge?
The superwide US fridges will cost more, cost more to run, give you less cupboard space and 'normal' sized fridges also offer things like Caz's booze flap (steady) and plumbed cold water. Our LG fridge does. It's very quiet and has an alarm if you've left the door ajar.

We don't need a huge fridge but I do like the idea of not having to crouch down to get stuff from the freezer drawers all the time. The doors are all standard sizes plus we have a side door for access to the utility room.

We went to have a look at beds today as it's the most important (spent a third of our lives on a bed). We're still going for ottoman but may go for divan style.

Other thoughts on mattresses:

- Current mattress is pocket sprung and very thick and comfortable.
- Didn't like mattresses that were pocket sprung and had a layer of foam on top.
- Did like pocket sprung encapsulated in foam
- Tempur mattresses were more comfortable than any of the above
- A medium orthopaedic mattress (foam) wasn't as hot or warming as a Tempur mattress

The problem is whilst the mattresses were comfortable for sleeping in, I've no idea what they're like for sex.

Funniest thing I ever did was shop for a dining room table by bending over it to see whether my feet still touched the floor

I've had experience of American style fridges in America. IME they were pretty convenient in size, but the freezer did have a tendency to freeze solid without regular defrostings. They aren't particularly quiet which won't really be an issue if your kitchen is separate to your dining room and living space, but check the energy ratings.

I've heard from a friend that Tempurpedic mattresses are really comfy as long as you are a fairly inactive sleeper, my friend had to get rid of it because he had disturbed sleep, cricked his neck and started having hip problems after some time because he wasn't easily able to shift position in his sleep. I don't know about sex but I'll ask him....

Wes got a pocket sprung with a layer (about 3 " or so) of Tempur on top - its the best mattresses we have had
