Just spent my lunch break scrubbing the kitchen sink in the new house. It's some weird granite type sink. Most of the marks have come off. Needs another bash. Dread to think what the oven will be like to clean.

'I have a fine time alone,’ he says. ‘I have my routine at the end of the day. I get home, I put the kettle on for some tea because the kettle is near the front door, then I go into the living room to put on the iPod — I’m passionate about music, mostly rhythm and blues — and these days I turn the fire on, which goes like this [he flicks an imaginary remote control] because I’ve got one of those.
‘And then . . . well, if it’s been a good day I might shuffle around the carpet, give it a little bit of whatever’ — he mimics a dance move — ‘because there’s no one there and I can do that.
‘I pick up my book and my cup of tea, and sit by the music so I can zap any tracks that don’t suit my mood. And that’s about the size of it. You know, it’s wild round my house!’
