http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/27/arts/television/leonard-nimoy-spock-of-star-trek-dies-at-83.html | | | | Quote: Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut “Star Trek,” died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83.
His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Mr. Nimoy announced last year that he had the disease, which he attributed to years of smoking, a habit he had given up three decades earlier. He had been hospitalized earlier in the week.
His artistic pursuits — poetry, photography and music in addition to acting — ranged far beyond the United Federation of Planets, but it was as Mr. Spock that Mr. Nimoy became a folk hero, bringing to life one of the most indelible characters of the last half century: a cerebral, unflappable, pointy-eared Vulcan with a signature salute and blessing: “Live long and prosper” (from the Vulcan “Dif-tor heh smusma”).

Not unexpected given the news I posted the other day, but still sad. He portrayed a character I grew up with.
CBS Action is running Bonanza. Like other Trek alumni, Nimoy appeared in an early episode, playing a card shark in bar.

A shame, but as said, not unexpected.
I still remember him best from Colombo.

Hmm, sad yes but not unexpected and its not like 83 is a bad innings.
He'll always be Spock for me. Anything else I've seen him in was a one off I think.

Apparently, his final communication, a tweet posted on the 23rd, reads The man was on it, right to the end.

So, he's gone beyond the final frontier at last.
Another piece of my childhood has died.
RIP

The funeral was on Sunday. William Shatner could not attend - he was on Florida at a Red Cross fund raising event. He got quite a bit of flack for this, but he decided to spend some time remembering Nimoy on Twitter and answering questions about his relationship with his second in command. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31693751
