If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

The problem is of course that the viewing figures don't really suggest that the majority want to watch a proper car show that's actually about cars most people might actually buy. I can't think of another car show on tv at the moment - can you?

5th Gear now airs on the History channel, after two years on Discovery, since it was dropped from Channel 5. Narrowly focussed shows don't attract large audiences.

I for one don't really care too much for serious reviews of family hatchbacks and people carriers etc. even though that's all I'm ever likely to be in a position to buy! If I want informative reviews, I'll tend to go for written things, and also hunt down information on specific cars I want. Watching Top Gear I want to see cars that are interesting in some way, and generally those that push the technological barrier. There are definitely some bits of TG that annoy me for just how farcical they are (ambulance episode springs to mind in the recent series), but on balance I get far more enjoyment out of the show than annoyance.

I'd say especially since the widespread adoption of the internet, 'consumer report' television is dead as a genre. Whose going to watch a TV show that's almost inevitably out of date when you can get up to date reviews and info on the web? TG is an entertainment show and has been for years. if it's had any useful factual content it's been entirely coincidental. Interesting point I read on another forum..

From here - http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthre ... p=77407219The thread seems to be going in the “they should bring him back” direction on that page. I think the argument is that Top Gear is basically the Jeremy Clarkson Show and losing him will kill it off. I think it needs a reboot anyway - regardless of the antics of the chief presenter.

I agree it could do with a refresh (the whole use of the word 'reboot' thing has gone way too far IMO) but the thing is, I don't think it can be as successful again. It's success this time round is something of a fluke - I doubt they knew they were going to be making a worldwide phenomena which would spawn spin-offs and magazines and live shows and toys etc etc when they first got going. It's success has been pretty 'organic' and that's incredibly hard to replicate. 'New TG' with other presenters and a changed style will probably be a successful show but will it be BBC2's best rated show and bring in £150m a year to the licence fee payer? I very, very much doubt it. I think it's almost unfair to expect it to, yet some people will.

God, I mean, I'm all for sacking the bloke if he punched someone but if everyone in the UK who swore at someone they work with got sacked... Persistent abuse, yes. Is there anything that says he's got a record of swearing at producers & the like?
If he punched the bloke, sack him. But let's at least be realistic.

There is the final warning he was supposedly under, but yeah, context is everything.

If he was going to be sacked he would've by now. He's too much of a valuable asset to the beeb.

Every time the BBC ducks the issue, it gets harder for them to act. If they don’t sack him, he’ll become pretty much invincible. If they do sack him, they’ll lose a massive cash cow. I hate to be the person who has to make the decision and then explain why in minute detail. I am noticing Jonathan Ross appearing on Radio 2 again this week.

Chris Evans was pretty emphatic about it not being him who would be taking over from Clarkson despite what a number of newspapers have been saying this morning (and Sky News according to my phones News app).
