Netflix would be so much better, but ITV has silly money and enjoys wasting it. Plus public profile might be a consideration long-term.

I really don't want to see Sue Perkins faking incompetence.

James May Quits ‘Top Gear’ | Variety

Maybe it's just the article, but there's a nasty impression left with 'all blown over' and 'Jeremy needs time out' - we're talking about a sustained verbal and physical attack on a guy who didn't even pursue the matter afterwards. Maybe seem a little less worried about Clarkson?

It'll be top gear - but not as we know it.

But it'll take a while for the manufacturers to trust a new team with their cars.

Hardly. There are thousands of motoring journalists and they pretty much all get loaned cars all the time. If manufacturers had to 'trust' them with cars first there'd be like one car magazine on the shop selves and that's it.

The reality is most of the driving in Top Gear was either entirely uneventful, e.g just driving an expensive car round a normal street or round the track at nowhere near it's peak performance, or it was done by 'The Stig', i.e. by an entirely faceless to the public professional driver. The number of expensive cars TG wrecked over the years is bordering on zero. In fact the main problems they had were mechanical failures in performance cars that are pretty much par for the course in those kinds of machines. new TG could certainly have a Stig equivalent the industry would be happy with and could employ experienced motor journalists who hadn't previously trashed cars they'd been loaned.

If New Top Gear want the motoring industry to lend them the expensive metal, they don't have to earn 'trust', they have to show they can reach an audience. The reason TG got to rag about in Lambos and Astons is not because they were 'trusted', it's because they had massive audiences including most of the people who would be able to afford Lambos and Astons and therefore the motor manufacturers were happy to have their cars appear on it. The only problem they ever had was getting hold of cars that cost upwards of a million pounds each and that was because those cars are essentially beyond advertising, they tend to sell out even before anybody knows exactly what they look like let alone 'go on sale'. Let's blunt here, the motoring industry saw Top Gear as advertising space, nothing more. As long as that's still available, they'll be happy to participate.
