Might it not be worth Gav putting a couple of the files up somewhere (copyright be damned) so a couple of other people can have a look/play with them?

Cheers for the help folks, but I've given up. I'm sat by a pile of CD's and I'm re-ripping them!

Only thing I can think of is that the tracks have unusual characters in the MP3 tags, so when iTunes is creating the files in the library it encounters characters that can't be used in the Finder, so it skips them? Just guessing now, I've never had any problems like this when adding MP3s created on another computer - not that I, erm, "borrow" music, you understand!

I'd be surprised if it does the same when you rip the tracks from the original CDs onto your Mac.

Sounds like a good plan.

I don't think I want the UK's answer to the MAFIAA knocking on my door, but thanks all the same!

OK - just out of interest, what’s the history of the failed files? What did you use to RIP them? Maybe we can replicate the situation without resorting to naughty file sharing.
