Both Nigel Farage and George Galloway lost. I am pleased.

Farage has resigned as leader, as he said he would if he didn't win South Thanet, but said he may well stand as a candidate in the party leadership election that will follow as a result of that. Which just shows how much of a duplicitous arse he really is.

There are probably now questions to be asked about the system itself - UKIP and the SNP got roughly the same number of total votes but the SNP got 57 (I think) MPs whereas UKIP got 2. I don't want UKIP to have MPs personally but I think you'd find it pretty hard to argue that's a 'fair' result. However, everyone knew what the system is and they could have figured out how to optimise their result given what they knew.

I certainly see your point. As it stands just now UKIP polled about 12% across the UK and so far have 1 seat whereas the SNP polled about 5% across the UK and got 56 seats. If you just look at Scotland, the only place the SNP stood MP's they polled 50% of the vote compared to UKIPs 1.6%. I do accept that in either case the SNP have done disproportionately well but in Scotland it's rather closer to reality than in the UK as a whole.

It'll be interesting speaking to my parents this weekend. Mum's virulently pro-union and anti-SNP so I suspect this will wind her up no end (although to be fair the SNP guy who go in did so with just under 60% of the votes on ~74% turnout so she can't really claim it's not representative of people's intentions).

The problem we always have at this point is around this ludicrous word 'mandate'. Those who govern will say they do have a mandate in the terms of the electoral system while those that don't will claim not having received a majority of the votes means the government have no mandate. It's the major disadvantage of a system that allows a majority of representation without a majority of votes.

Nick Clegg's resigned too now.

I'll miss him, he was a good guy. Guardian Obituary

a very interesting election a majority conservative Govt. the first for 23 years but a SNP landslide in Scotland

i believe that over the next 5 years we will move to a federal type of Govt. for the UK

and more importantly a referendum on the EU in 2017 ...

And the head of the Greens has gone rather quiet. They got their highest vote share ever but still only have one MP. They were nowhere near in any of their other target seats. Suggests a lot of possibly wasted effort.

Unfortunately for the Greens they're effectively part of the fragmented 'left' and nobody seems to do fragmentation and infighting like the left it would appear. They'd need to prise people out of the Labour party and while they've been vastly more successful than pretty much any other 'left' party that I can think of they still haven't made much of a dent beyond Caroline Lucas and I don't think Natalie Bennett helped much in that regard. I suspect also that when you dig a little below the surface of their policies, however laudable many of them are a fair few just sound barking in the current global and financial climate.

the EU is history, the only trouble with that is, the EU hasn’t seen it yet ...

Everything is history eventually. However if you think the simple fact that politician has promised (hah!) a referendum in one of the member states actually somehow dooms the EU to rapid dissolution you're far more naive than your posts so far suggest. There are many, many vested interest that will see the EU continue, whether the UK is a member or not.
